Make sure authentication is configured for your pod before storing private information. SilverBullet supports account-managed servers and single-space servers; the latter use the SB_USER setting for login, and a single-space server without credentials is open to anyone who can reach it. Follow the authentication guide for the mode your pod uses. Once in your space, the Index page offers quick notes, journals and tasks to get started.

No. PikaPods sets up and runs SilverBullet for you, including OS and app updates and HTTPS. You won't touch Docker or a server. Your files and database stay accessible if you ever want to move them elsewhere.

Yes. Open your pod in a supported browser and let the initial sync finish. You can install it as a PWA on desktop or mobile and edit the locally stored space offline. Reconnect to sync changes. This keeps a copy of your notes on that device, so use a browser profile you trust. External services and server-only actions still need a connection.

SilverBullet Desktop for macOS, Windows and Linux can sync a local space with your server. It is a separate, commercial client: free for personal and education use, with paid licensing for work. The MIT-licensed server and browser client do not require that desktop purchase. Desktop sync uses SilverBullet authentication; the docs do not support putting an additional authentication proxy in front of that sync connection.

Set up incremental backups to S3 in your pod settings for automatic nightly snapshots, or download your files and database yourself. We keep whole-server backups for server failures, but they aren't a per-pod restore service, so your own backup is what protects your data.

You can use SilverBullet instead of Notion and Roam Research. PikaPods runs it for you, and you can move your files and database elsewhere.

Notion is a hosted team workspace with databases and collaboration. SilverBullet is a personal, programmable notebook in plain Markdown files, with queries and Space Lua instead of a visual database builder. It takes more tinkering and works offline in the browser. Compare its sharing options if a whole team will use it.

No. You add prepaid credit and your pods are billed by the hour from that balance, rounded up to full hours. There are no contracts or minimum terms: delete a pod anytime and billing stops. Optional automatic top-ups keep your pods running without manual payments.

You do. And you're in full control. If you ever want to download, migrate, edit or delete your data, just enable file and database access for your pod and it will be right there.
