BookStack Hosting

Managed BookStack, ready in under a minute.

BookStack is an open source wiki and knowledge base for team handbooks, project documentation and personal reference notes. Organize information into books, optional chapters and pages, then group books on shelves. Its familiar structure gives shared documentation a clear home without requiring everyone to learn a markup language. It suits teams that prefer a clear hierarchy to free-form pages.

Write with the visual editor or choose Markdown, add diagrams with the built-in diagrams.net editor, and find information with full-text search and links to individual paragraphs. Roles and content permissions control who can read or edit, while page revisions let you revisit earlier changes. Export content as HTML, PDF, text, Markdown or a portable ZIP. One limit to plan for: shelf permissions don't automatically cascade to the books inside.

It is an alternative to Confluence and Notion.

What you can do with BookStack

Organized knowledge

Group pages into books and optional chapters, then collect related books on shelves. A book can appear on more than one shelf.

Flexible editing

Use the visual editor or write in Markdown with a live preview. Create diagrams directly within your documentation using diagrams.net.

Search and connect

Search across your knowledge base or within a book. Link directly to a paragraph to point readers to the relevant instructions.

Content permissions

Assign roles to control what people can do, and override permissions for particular content. Give different groups access to the information they need.

What users say about BookStack

Summarized from public community discussions about BookStack, not about PikaPods.

Structure shapes the fit

Users describe the book-based structure as easy to understand for documentation and recipes, while a worldbuilding user finds the fixed depth restrictive for more complex material (documentation and recipes, worldbuilding tradeoff).

Approachable everyday editing

Users praise quick formatting and straightforward editing for their documentation. One workplace user says the familiar visual editor helped nontechnical colleagues adopt BookStack (documentation experience, workplace adoption).
